Food beyond boundaries..
A very good friend of mine kind enough to get me a Korean healthy snack called 'Yakgwa' , when I tasted it..it just reminded me of my moms Athirsam..Athirsam is a South Indian snack made of Rice and Brown sugar. When I looked in to the ingredients of Yakgwa it said the same thing. What a coincidence!!!! Then I start to think of all the Korean snacks I have tried which has similar texture ,taste and ingredients but their shape is different. This is the just small list of Korean-South Indian snacks to my knowledge which I tasted personally and found they are similar. Pictures I took from google images and PC are listed at the end..
1. Steamed Rice cakes:
In Tamil we call Kozhukatai and in Korean its called Songpyeon (half moon cake). Both are made of rice flour and stuffed with sesame seeds or nuts with brown sugar. Kozhukatai is a special dish which is specially made for Lord Ganesha on his birthday (Hindu elephant face god ) and Songpyeon is made specially for thanks giving day (Chuseok-Harvest festival)..sometimes the stuffing may vary..
2. Healthy Snack:
Like I mentioned earlier my friend got me Korean healthy snack 'Yakgwa'.. When I tasted it , the texture & taste totally reminded me of my favorite mom's snack 'Athirsam' which is made usually for Diwali. Main ingredients are same , sometimes nuts are used to decorate the Yakgwa. Only shape and name differs in these different version.
3. Puffed rice snack:
In Korea , healthy puffed rice snacks are found everywhere and with lots of varieties. Gang Jeong- type of snack which is made of sweetened puffed rice is similar to 'Pori-Orundai' in tamil which is made on Lord Krishna's birthday or for Karthigai Deepam. Korean version can be found everywhere and it usually comes in cylindrical shape. But tastes the same or maybe less sweetened. Main ingredients are puffed rice and sugar syrup.
4. Deep fried Chilli/Potato snack:
When it rains ,any South-Indian would think of this hot and spicy Bajjis with hot masala Chai.. Its that dish which gives me nostalgic about my visit to my grandma's house. She makes it for me coz I just LOVEEE them.. When I saw the similar version as Korean street food called Tuigim(튀김) , I was sooo happy. But Korean version is not so spicy because they use flour, veggie( Chili, sweet potato etc.,) or sea Food and salt(not sure about this). But Indian version has Chickpea flour, chili powder, Turmeric, salt & veggie mostly Chili/potato/onion as main ingredients. Its one of the best beach snack too If I'm not wrong in Chennai. Personally I haven't tried the street food in India.
These are just a list of snacks I can think of right now, but I will add more as I remember.. I think there are few more but not sure about their names yet.. Will add them when I get time.. Till then ADIOS!!!!
